Fyodor Ivanovich Belov was born in the town of Pavlovsk, near Leningrad, in 1922. The son of a local official, his childhood was more comfortable, if only slightly, than many of his schoolmates. His parents encouraged him to study music, and Fyodor took an early interest in the outdoors and reading. In 1940 he was sent to Leningrad State University to study literature, but quit school a year later to join the army. Motivated by a lack of food and heat in their freezing flat, he and his two roommates joined up in December of 1941, roughly two and a half months into the siege. Upon enlisting the three were each given a uniform, a rifle, and- most importantly- their soldiers bread ration. They were then promptly sent to the front to take part in the defense of Leningrad.
