Is there anything period correct between the zelt tent and a full on large Tentsmith  officers tent?
Is there any modification that might provide some degree of mosquito or insect control?
With respect,

I wonder about buying a modern nylon tent with zippers and netting and floor and then covering it with a zelt tent.  If the modern tent was small enough or if you used six zelts instead of four you might have a pretty cool setup that is also pretty comfortable.  Just get the modern tent in subdued color.  :)

Or there is this option:

For bug control, there are bug netting shelters you can buy that would probably fit nicely inside of an officer's wall tent. The only one's I seem to be able to find at the moment are pup tent-sized and pricey... I guess you could always just buy some bug netting and rig it yourself. I was trying to figure out a good way to do this myself, since it looks like we'll probably have bugs at neillsville this year.

Black Diamond is a maker of quality modern outdoors gear.
Attached is a photo of their "Mega Bug" which has a welded seamed and taped waterproof floor and an attached mosquito net enclosure with a zippered door.
It was almost a perfect fit under a standard sized zelt with only a slight modification and virtually invisible when in place.
This should provide bug free and dry conditions to a zelt encampment for minimal additional cost and no appreciable sacrifice to authenticity.

Fritz, I think you have come up with a pretty good idea.  I don't know if it would fly in reenacting circles but it is certainly something that would be very much alright in airsoft circles.  Most reenacting circles too.
