Starshiy Serzhant Fyodor Georgevich Grifyenov

Born in 1900 as the son of a Karellian woodcutter, Grifyenov was forcibly drafted into Trotsky’s Red Guard on the night of his nineteenth birthday.  He served as a cavalry scout against Yudenich’s Whites in the Northwest during the Civil War, and chose to remain in the Red Army after discovering that his family had been liquidated by the Cheka on suspicion of providing aid to the Whites.  Serving against counter-revolutionary forces in the Ukraine, he was selected for academy training and worked his way up to the rank of Capitan before an unknown colleague denounced him as a black market profiteer during the Great Purge of the 1930s.  After a stint in the Lubyanka, he was sent to a labor camp somewhere in the Urals for a year.  Reactivated as an infantry private when Stalin needed troops to invade Poland and Finland, his skill as a scout served his unit well when it was sent to the front during the Winter War with Finland in 1940.  He was seriously wounded when a dugout collapsed on his unit during a shelling.  Able to move and refusing to wait for evacuation or slow death, he and another wounded comrade walked and crawled under their own power most of the way back to Leningrad.  During his convalescence, his service record somehow attracted the notice of certain officers of the Leningrad Military District and resulted in his rehabilitation.  Reinstated as a Starshiy Serzhant, Grifyenov was assigned command of an infantry squad in the newly formed 198th in 1941, just in time for the start of Operation Barbarossa.
