Born into a small working class family, Aldrich has never strayed far beyond his hometown border of Dortmund Germany. Though historically Alsatian German, members of the Kiesel family have been fighting the French over their disputed homeland for as long as anyone could remember, culminating in their exile into Dortmund. When the French reclaimed the region in the wake of The Great War, it was to their bitter resentment. To no surprise, therefore, when news of a war with France reached the ears of Aldrich he quit his apprenticeship and tried to enlist. However, being only 17 years old, he was denied entry until his birthday which came after France's surrender. Still he enlisted and was placed as security to an experimental mechanized mortar detachment. When the war with Russia broke out, the mortar halftracks were sent to reinforce the SS and his unit was transferred to a supply depot. When supplies ran out in lieu of the harsh Russian winter, his commander loaded them on trucks bound to the newly reformed 3rd Panzergrenadier Regiment.
