Udo was born outside of Hamburg, Germany on May 8 of 1912 to his parents Eckart and Anja.  Eckart, a reservist in the Kaiser's navy, perished in 1915 aboard the SMS Westfalen during the infamous Battle of Jutland.  Having no recollection of his father, Udo's mother took on the task of raising their boy on her meager salary as a grammar teacher in the center of Hamburg proper.

As a boy, Udo fantasized about becoming a U-boot captain and sinking English ships off the coast of the North Sea.   However, due to his paltry social status as the child of a widowed mother, he was not able to attend Naval training and instead became an eel fisher at the age of 16, operating out of Wilhelmshaven.

Having grown into a rather tall man, he was not selected for service in the U-boot arm at the outbreak of war in 1939.  Instead, he was put into Kriegsmarine service on a coastal patrol boat, searching the waters of Western Europe for mines and other obstacles laid down by Allied submarines.

This rather lax and easy duty came to an abrubt end when, in November of 1943, Udo was transfered into the 3rd Panzergrenadier Division for front line service.  He served as a cook and rifleman until surrendering himself to American soldiers in April of 1945.

Udo was released from allied captivity in July of 1946 where he ran an impressive eel fishing operation until his death in 1981.
